Who Should I See for My Sport Injury?
My GP, a Physiotherapist, Sports Therapist, Sports Massage Therapist or an Osteopath?
We know this can all get quite confusing!
As a general rule, your GP's line of action will consist of pharmaceutical management, probably anti-inflammatory medication and pain relief (depending on the injury) and advise you to rest and stop your activities. In my experience this doesn't go down a treat with the sporting community or those who just need to keep going!
Physiotherapists & Sports Therapist will most often prescribe exercise to resolve a so-called "muscle imbalance" which is often stated to be the source of many injuries, from back problem to knee pain & shoulder pain. Physiotherapist often use additional equipment such as ultra-sounds machines.
However, in my experience many Physiotherapist in Norwich do not use these so always ask before you book!
Osteopathy can be a great choice to address sports injuries.
Depending on your individual situation and your specific injury, Osteopathy is often the most comprehensive way to resolve the injury. On some occasions it can be beneficial to combine osteopathy with either Physiotherapy or Sports Therapy.

How Do You Treat Sports Injuries?
Our approach varies depending on individual cases but it will generally aim to:
- Decrease swelling & pain
- Remove unnecessary forces & strains to the injured area
- Increase Range of Movement + Mobility
- Strengthen the area with relevant exercises
- Help Prevent Further Re-occurrence of the problem
In our clinical experience, a muscle that is subjected to restriction in the surrounding joints will not work effectively, giving the impression of it being "weak". Whilst strengthening exercises may help, addressing the joint restrictions and enabling effective bio-mechanics will often do a world of good in enabling muscles to function properly.
In my rather biased opinion, this is where Osteopaths have the upper hand on other therapists where it comes to treating Sports Injuries: we can address whole body structural realignment, provide effective pain relief using gentle manipulations, myofascial release, Medical Acupuncture, Sports Taping and various method of soft tissue releases and support recovery and return to full activity with exercise rehabilitation.
